Michael Vick showed no signs of rust during the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice Sunday, throwing tight spirals with plenty of velocity.
“How does Michael look in the offense? He looks pretty good,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. “It was a fairly seamless transition, even though he hadn’t played for two years, because of the terminology. It’s very similar. Now, many of the details are different and details are where you win football games, so that’s the important part there. But the terminology is coming very easily to him.”
Mornhinweg said coach Andy Reid will probably make a decision Tuesday on whether Vick will make his preseason debut Thursday at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Vick worked with offensive assistants James Urban and Doug Pederson on Sunday.
“Every day he works with James and Doug he picks up a little more,” Mornhinweg said. “He hasn’t played in two years, so a lot of it is just getting him into football shape.
“I think he was in decent shape coming in, as far as in general. But moving, cutting, lateral movement, throwing the football, moving while he’s throwing the football, that’s what we needed to see.”

ASPCA condemns Vick, Eagles
New Eagles quarterback Michael Vick’s handlers approached the American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty months ago about doing educational work against dogfighting, but the organization immediately turned them down because of “his indescribable and barbaric acts of animal cruelty” while running an illegal dogfighting operation, the group revealed on its Web site yesterday.
The remarks, the first public comments from the group, were written by ASPCA president Ed Sayres.
“This organization and I personally have seen the acts of cruelty committed by Mr. Vick first hand – acts so heinous that the public has never laid witness to them,” Sayres wrote, noting that the ASPCA helped process evidence that led to Vick’s 18-month imprisonment.
Sayres condemned Vick’s return to the NFL and signing with the Eagles: “Today, it is difficult to see him in the uniform of a Philadelphia Eagle because of the startling lack of judgment and moral character he has demonstrated over the past several years. It is questionable whether he will have any credibility as an educator on the dog fighting issue.”
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he is convinced that Vick is remorseful and deserves a second chance.
Vick to Debut Next Week
According to head coach Andy Reid, Michael Vick will make his Philadelphia Eagles debut next Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Reid said Saturday that “right now that’s the plan.”
Vick signed with the Eagles on Aug. 13 but was not allowed to play in the team’s first two preseason games under the provisions of his suspension from the league.
Vick will backup Donovan McNabb, but could see some time in the “Wildcat” formation this season due to his athleticism and running ability. Unless McNabb gets hurt, Vick will likely see limited time at quarterback.
