Quotables
"There's so much ego involved in dog fighting, but why? It's not a skill, it's not something you get accolades for. You don't really get anything good out of it, so go find a way to satisfy your ego in a way that doesn't harm animals or other people. And maybe helps some people out instead. You can feed your ego and do good at the same time." - Feb 21, 2010; Essence Magazine

Goodbye 2009!

As hard as it is to believe, it’s about that time! I just wanted to wish you all a very safe, happy and healthy New Year, and if ’09 just wasn’t that good to you, make 2010 your year!

Vick relegated to third QB

Michael Vick was listed as the third quarterback for Philadelphia’s game against Denver on Sunday after missing practice all week with a quadriceps contusion.

Vick got hurt on a running play in the Eagles’ win over San Francisco last week. Kevin Kolb backed up Donovan McNabb against the Broncos.

Denver was without wide receiver Eddie Royal because of neck and hand injuries. Spencer Larsen, a special teams player and backup inside linebacker, and backup cornerback Ty Law were sidelined with hamstring injuries.

BTW for everyone who haven’t noticed this on Twitter, Eagles is a trending topic for the day.

Eagles beat Broncos: 30 – 27

David Akers kicked a 28-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining, lifting the Eagles to a 30-27 victory over the Broncos on Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Jason Avant spikes the ball after catching a touchdown pass in the second half of an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos.

Kyle Orton rallied the Broncos from a 27-10 deficit in the third quarter, but Donovan McNabb led the Eagles on a winning drive in the final minutes.

Rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin set up Akers’ kick with an outstanding, 27-yard catch along the sideline to the Broncos 13. The catch initially was ruled incomplete, but it was overturned after replays showed Maclin kept both feet inbound while making a diving reception.

Three plays later, Akers nailed a gimme.

Eagles players honor Michael Vick with award for courage

According to Philadelphia Eagles players, the most courageous man on the team in 2009 was one who started the year serving time in prison for an act of extreme cowardice.

Today, the Eagles announced that Michael Vick was the 2009 winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, an honor given to a player who shows courage in the face of adversity. Vick’s teammates voted for the award, thus demonstrating how tone-deaf and out-of-touch NFL players are with reality.

According to the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation Web site:

Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected by their teammates for team effort, as well as individual performance.

The Ed Block Courage Award recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication. He is also a community role model.

One recipient is selected from each NFL team, usually for things like coming back from injury, doing good work in the community or long, dedicated service to a franchise. I’d be surprised if the award’s founders intended for the honor to be given to someone doing community service as part of the terms of his parole or for showing courage in the face of reporters asking legitimate questions about federal crimes.

The top 10 off-field stories of the decade

Coming in at #1 of course….

The biggest off-field story of the decade started with a search warrant at Michael Vick’s Surry County, Virginia home, in which dogfighting facilities and over 60 dogs were found. Vick was at the center of the controversy, and when everything came down, he received a 23-month sentence in December of 2007 for felony charges of operating an interstate dogfighting ring. His reinstatement into the league and subsequent play with the Philadelphia Eagles has been far more of a non-factor than expected — as it was with Pacman Jones, much of Vick’s talent may have left with the end of his first NFL incarnation.

Giants lose to Eagles

The Eagles beat the San Francisco Giants 27-13.

Michael Vick was forced out of Sunday’s game against San Francisco with a bruised thigh.

Vick was stopped on a third-and-1 late in the first quarter and left the field on his own power. He took a seat on the bench and was treated by the training staff.

Vick left for the locker room at the end of the quarter.

Vick was on the field for three plays. He ran twice for 2 yards.
