"There's so much ego involved in dog fighting, but why? It's not a skill, it's not something you get accolades for. You don't really get anything good out of it, so go find a way to satisfy your ego in a way that doesn't harm animals or other people. And maybe helps some people out instead. You can feed your ego and do good at the same time." - Feb 21, 2010; Essence Magazine

Eagles May Cut Vick

A person familiar with the team’s thinking says the Philadelphia Eagles are strongly considering releasing Michael Vick.

The person says the team might cut Vick no matter what police conclude during their investigation of a shooting that followed the quarterback’s birthday celebration in Virginia Beach last week. The person spoke to The Associated Press early Saturday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The Eagles issued a statement Saturday saying “any report or speculation that suggests the Eagles are considering releasing Vick are not true. We will continue to gather information and monitor the situation and we will not have any further comment until that process is complete.”

Vick has said he had nothing to do with the shooting. He also said he reported the incident to the Eagles and to the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell told the former Atlanta Falcons star after reinstating him last season that his margin for error was “extremely limited.”

Vick is entering his second season with the Eagles and is due to earn $5.2 million. A three-time Pro Bowl pick, Vick is Kevin Kolb’s backup and the most experienced quarterback on the roster following the trade of Donovan McNabb.

The Eagles were heavily criticized by animal rights activists and fans for signing Vick last summer less than a month after he finished serving 18 months in federal prison for his role in a dogfighting operation.

Team owner Jeffrey Lurie called Vick’s actions “horrific” and “despicable.” He said he did serious “soul-searching” before agreeing to sign him.

Should Vick be starting quarterback?

When the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, the Kevin Kolb era officially began in Philadelphia.

Shortly after the McNabb trade, Eagles owners squashed any Kolb vs. Michael Vick quarterback controversy when Kolb signed an eye-popping one-year, $12.26 million contract extension.

Last week, star receiver DeSean Jackson expressed the players’ confidence in Kolb when he stated, “I don’t think we lost anything, even with McNabb being gone.”

Not everyone in the Lehigh Valley is so sure. Read the rest.

Cowboys Beat Eagles 34-14

The Eagles are one-and-done in the playoffs for the first time under coach Andy Reid. Philadelphia had been 7-0 in playoff openers with Reid and 6-0 with Donovan McNabb at quarterback.

But they finished 0-3 against Dallas this season. The Eagles lost 24-0 last weekend and couldn’t change much. They got Michael Vick back from an injury and used him in place of McNabb for a few plays. He threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin on his first snap, tying it at 7 early in the second quarter, but also messed up a handoff deep in his own territory, setting the Cowboys up for the touchdown that made it 24-7.

Dallas stretched the lead to 27-7 at halftime. A 73-yard touchdown run by Felix Jones made it 34-7 going into the fourth quarter. The Cowboys limited the Eagles to 18 snaps in the decisive first half. Philadelphia gained only 140 yards in that span—or, 64 on all plays other than Vick’s TD.

Vick’s TD pass was the longest of his career, the longest for the Eagles this season and the longest ever against the Cowboys in the postseason.

Eagles fall to Cowboys

Unlike the last six games of the season, the Eagles came out on the losing end tonight against the Dallas Cowboys, 34-0, which earned the Cowboys the NFC East title.

Vick relegated to third QB

Michael Vick was listed as the third quarterback for Philadelphia’s game against Denver on Sunday after missing practice all week with a quadriceps contusion.

Vick got hurt on a running play in the Eagles’ win over San Francisco last week. Kevin Kolb backed up Donovan McNabb against the Broncos.

Denver was without wide receiver Eddie Royal because of neck and hand injuries. Spencer Larsen, a special teams player and backup inside linebacker, and backup cornerback Ty Law were sidelined with hamstring injuries.

BTW for everyone who haven’t noticed this on Twitter, Eagles is a trending topic for the day.

Eagles beat Broncos: 30 – 27

David Akers kicked a 28-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining, lifting the Eagles to a 30-27 victory over the Broncos on Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Jason Avant spikes the ball after catching a touchdown pass in the second half of an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos.

Kyle Orton rallied the Broncos from a 27-10 deficit in the third quarter, but Donovan McNabb led the Eagles on a winning drive in the final minutes.

Rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin set up Akers’ kick with an outstanding, 27-yard catch along the sideline to the Broncos 13. The catch initially was ruled incomplete, but it was overturned after replays showed Maclin kept both feet inbound while making a diving reception.

Three plays later, Akers nailed a gimme.

Eagles players honor Michael Vick with award for courage

According to Philadelphia Eagles players, the most courageous man on the team in 2009 was one who started the year serving time in prison for an act of extreme cowardice.

Today, the Eagles announced that Michael Vick was the 2009 winner of the Ed Block Courage Award, an honor given to a player who shows courage in the face of adversity. Vick’s teammates voted for the award, thus demonstrating how tone-deaf and out-of-touch NFL players are with reality.

According to the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation Web site:

Each year, the Ed Block Courage Awards honors those National Football League players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected by their teammates for team effort, as well as individual performance.

The Ed Block Courage Award recipient symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication. He is also a community role model.

One recipient is selected from each NFL team, usually for things like coming back from injury, doing good work in the community or long, dedicated service to a franchise. I’d be surprised if the award’s founders intended for the honor to be given to someone doing community service as part of the terms of his parole or for showing courage in the face of reporters asking legitimate questions about federal crimes.
